What is a Tummy Tuck?

Washboard Flat

A Tummy Tuck, or Abdominoplasty, is a procedure that involves removing excess skin and fat to improve body contours by tightening the abdominal muscles or abdominal wall. A tummy tuck is often combined with liposuction to remove left-over fatty tissue and contour your abdomen so that it is tighter and smaller in terms of width.

A tummy tuck is not a weight-loss procedure. Rather, it is a body contouring procedure that does what diet and exercise cannot do. However, many patients do lose 10 - 20 pounds, depending on the amount of tissue removed and exercise and diet regimen after the procedure.

Your Tummy Tuck Procedure

Personalized Procedure

To begin, an incision will be made below your bikini line. Next, your skin is lifted to your lower chest area. We carefully preserve your belly button and maintain the blood supply to your skin. Next, the loose skin below your belly button is removed, and the abdominal wall and muscles are tightened with sutures.

The skin is pulled back down to your incision area, a spot for your belly button is marked, and the skin is removed. Sutures secure the new belly button, usually measuring about 1.5 cm (0.59”) in diameter. Finally, drains are placed throughout the pubic area, below the skin, and over the abdominal wall. During healing, the drains will stop fluid from building up in and around the incision. We often perform liposuction to remove the fat that collects above your hips (aka love handles) and remove additional skin from that area, if needed. Then, the incision is closed with absorbable sutures, and dressings are applied.

Tummy Tuck Recovery and Aftercare

The Road to Recovery

During your recovery, your treatment area may be tender, sore, numb, swollen, or bruised, and drains will be present. Burning and itching may be present. Bed rest is recommended for the first two days post-procedure. A compression garment should be worn. Strenuous activity and heavy lifting are to be avoided until cleared by your team at West Empire Aesthetics.

Here’s a general timeline to guide you through the process.

First Few Days Post-Surgery

During the first several days after your tummy tuck, it’s normal to experience swelling, bruising, and tenderness around the incision sites. Your treatment area may feel sore and numb, and you may notice some burning or itching. Pain medication prescribed by your provider will help manage any discomfort.

Although you may be inclined to stay in bed, gentle movement is encouraged to increase circulation and prevent blood clots. Bed rest is recommended for the first two days, and you'll need to wear a compression garment to support your abdomen and reduce swelling.

Keep in mind that you’ll need assistance with daily activities during this time, such as getting in and out of bed or fastening your compression garment.

First Week to Two Weeks

As you continue to heal, you'll notice that you remain slightly hunched over due to tightness across your abdomen. This is completely normal and will gradually improve over the next week or two.

Support from loved ones during this time is crucial, not just for physical tasks but for emotional encouragement as well. Sleeping on your back with your torso and head elevated is recommended to minimize tension on your incisions and ensure proper healing.

By the end of the first week, you'll begin to feel more comfortable moving around, but it's important to take it slow. Returning to work might be possible after two weeks, but only if your job doesn't involve strenuous activity.

Weeks Three to Six

As you enter the third week, you may start to resume some of your normal activities, but it's essential to listen to your body and avoid pushing yourself too hard.

Strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and exercises should be avoided for at least six weeks to protect your results and ensure proper healing. This includes lifting heavy objects (like small children) and engaging in sexual activity, as these can raise your heart rate and blood pressure, potentially leading to complications.

Ongoing Care and Healing

The recovery process doesn’t end after six weeks; your body will continue to heal and adjust for several months. It’s important to attend all follow-up appointments with your surgical team at West Empire Aesthetics to monitor your progress and address any concerns.

By following these guidelines and giving your body the time it needs to heal, you’ll be well on your way to enjoying the beautiful results of your Tummy Tuck.
